Moving a piano isn’t just another item on your checklist. It’s not like shifting a couch or packing a few boxes. A piano is heavy, delicate, and often holds emotional value. Whether it’s an upright piano in your living room or a grand piano that has been in your family for years, moving it requires skill, planning, and the right equipment.
That’s where Move Genius Canada comes in. If you’re planning a déménagement piano in Montreal, you need professionals who understand both the weight and the worth of your instrument.
Let’s walk through what makes piano moving different, why hiring experts matters, and how Move Genius Canada makes the whole process feel easier than you expect.
Why Moving a Piano Is a Different Game
A piano might look like just another piece of furniture, but it’s built very differently. Inside, there are thousands of moving parts—strings, hammers, dampers—all carefully calibrated. Even a slight tilt or sudden movement can throw things off.
Now add the weight. Most upright pianos weigh between 300 and 500 pounds. Grand pianos can easily go over 1,000 pounds. That’s not something you want to handle with a couple of friends and a rented dolly.
And then there’s the shape. Pianos are bulky and unevenly weighted. That makes navigating stairs, tight hallways, or narrow doorways especially tricky.
You don’t get a second chance if something goes wrong.
What Makes Move Genius Canada the Right Choice
When you choose Move Genius Canada for your piano move in Montreal, you’re not just hiring movers—you’re working with a team that understands precision.
They don’t treat your piano like cargo. They treat it like a fragile instrument that deserves care from start to finish.
Here’s what sets them apart:
1. Specialized Equipment
Moving a piano requires more than basic tools. Move Genius Canada uses heavy-duty straps, protective padding, piano boards, and custom dollies designed specifically for these kinds of moves.
2. Trained Professionals
This isn’t guesswork. Their team is trained to handle different types of pianos and knows how to balance, lift, and transport them safely.
3. Careful Planning
Every move starts with a plan. They assess your space, identify potential challenges, and map out the safest route before lifting anything.
4. Damage Prevention
From wrapping the piano to protecting your floors and walls, every step is focused on avoiding damage—not just to the piano, but to your home too.
Types of Piano Moves They Handle
Not all piano moves are the same. Move Genius Canada covers a wide range of scenarios, including:
Local Moves in Montreal
Whether you’re moving across the street or across the city, their team ensures your piano arrives safely.
Long-Distance Moves
If your move takes you outside Montreal, you can still rely on their expertise. They coordinate logistics to keep your piano secure throughout the journey.
Residential Moves
Moving a piano from one home to another requires careful navigation through tight spaces, stairs, and doorways.
Commercial Moves
If you’re relocating a piano for a studio, concert hall, or school, they handle it with the same level of care.
The Process: What to Expect
If you’ve never hired piano movers before, you might be wondering how it all works. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Step 1: Assessment
They start by understanding your piano type, location, and destination. This helps them plan everything in advance.
Step 2: Preparation
Your piano is carefully wrapped and secured using protective materials.
Step 3: Safe Handling
The team lifts and moves the piano using proper techniques to avoid strain or imbalance.
Step 4: Transport
During transport, the piano is secured to prevent movement or vibration.
Step 5: Placement
Once at your new location, they place the piano exactly where you want it.
Why You Should Never DIY a Piano Move
It’s tempting to save money and try moving the piano yourself. But the risks are real.
You could injure yourself or someone helping you. You could damage your floors, walls, or staircase. Worst of all, you could permanently damage the piano.
Repairing a piano can cost more than the move itself. Sometimes, the damage isn’t even fixable.
Hiring professionals like Move Genius Canada isn’t just convenient—it’s the safer and smarter choice.
Combining Piano Moving with Full-Service Moves
If you’re already planning a move, it makes sense to bundle services.

Protecting Your Investment
A piano isn’t cheap. Even older models can hold significant value.
Beyond the financial aspect, there’s often emotional value. Maybe it’s the piano you learned to play on, or one passed down through generations.
Move Genius Canada understands that. Their goal is to protect both the physical instrument and what it represents to you.
Tips Before Your Piano Move
Even when hiring professionals, there are a few things you can do to make the process smoother:
Clear the Path
Make sure hallways, doorways, and staircases are free of obstacles.
Measure Spaces
Double-check that your piano can fit through doors and into its new location.
Secure Loose Items
Remove decorations or items placed on top of the piano.
Communicate Details
Let the movers know about stairs, elevators, or tight corners in advance.
These small steps help ensure everything goes smoothly on moving day.
The Montreal Advantage
Montreal has its own challenges—narrow streets, older buildings, and tight staircases. Moving a piano here requires local experience.
Move Genius Canada knows the city well. They understand how to navigate these challenges and plan accordingly.
That local knowledge can make a big difference.
Stress-Free Experience from Start to Finish
Moving is already stressful. Adding a piano to the mix can make it feel overwhelming.
But when you work with professionals who know what they’re doing, the stress fades.
You don’t have to worry about lifting, balancing, or transporting. You can focus on settling into your new space while they handle the heavy work.

Move Genius Canada offers all of that—and more.

If you’re planning a déménagement piano in Montreal, choosing the right movers can make all the difference.
1. How do I prepare my piano before a move in Montreal?
Before your piano move, you don’t need to do anything too technical, but a few simple steps can really help the process go smoothly. Start by clearing the space around your piano so the movers can access it easily from all sides. If there are fragile items, decorations, or anything sitting on top of it, remove them ahead of time. You should also make sure pathways like hallways, doorways, and stairs are free of clutter so nothing slows the team down on moving day.
If you’re using a professional service like déménagement piano from Move Genius Canada, they will handle the wrapping, padding, and safe transport. You don’t need to disassemble anything yourself, and you definitely shouldn’t try to lift or tilt it. Just give them clear information about your space, especially if there are tight corners or stairs. That helps them plan the safest route for your piano.
2. How much does it cost to move a piano in Montreal?
The cost of moving a piano in Montreal depends on a few real-world factors rather than a fixed price. Things like the type of piano you have (upright or grand), how many stairs are involved, the distance of the move, and how easy it is to access your home all play a role. A ground-floor move will naturally cost less than carrying a heavy piano down several flights of stairs or through a narrow older building in the city.
When you book through Move Genius Canada’s déménagement express or dedicated piano service, you’re paying for safety, equipment, and trained movers—not just transportation. The real value is avoiding damage, injuries, or costly repairs that can happen with DIY attempts. Most people find that professional piano moving ends up being more affordable in the long run because it protects such a valuable instrument.
3. Can you move a piano upstairs or downstairs safely?
Yes, a piano can be moved up or down stairs, but it’s not something you want to attempt without trained professionals. Pianos are extremely heavy and unevenly balanced, which makes stairs one of the most challenging parts of any move. One wrong shift in weight can damage the piano or cause serious injury.
That’s why services like déménagement Rive-Sud or specialized piano moving from Move Genius Canada use proper equipment like straps, dollies, and protective padding. The movers are trained to coordinate every step so the weight is evenly distributed and controlled at all times. They also plan the angle and route before lifting anything. If your building has tight staircases or sharp turns, they adjust their technique accordingly. So yes, it can be done safely—but only with the right experience and tools.
4. What type of pianos can Move Genius Canada move?
Move Genius Canada handles almost every type of piano you can think of. That includes upright pianos, baby grands, concert grands, digital pianos, and even older or antique models that need extra care. Each type requires a slightly different approach because of size, weight, and structure. For example, grand pianos need careful disassembly of legs and secure wrapping of the body, while upright pianos require strong balancing techniques during lifting.
If you’re planning a move through déménagement Québec, the same level of care applies no matter where the piano is going. The team understands that every piano is unique, and they don’t treat them like standard furniture. Whether it’s a family piano or a professional performance instrument, they adjust their handling to match its condition and value so it arrives safely at your new location.
5. Do I need to tune my piano after moving it?
Yes, it’s very common for a piano to need tuning after a move, even when it’s handled carefully by professionals. That’s because pianos are sensitive to movement, temperature changes, and slight vibrations during transport. Even if nothing goes wrong, the internal strings can shift slightly.
After your piano is delivered through a service like petit déménagement or a dedicated piano relocation, it’s a good idea to wait a few days before tuning it. This gives the instrument time to adjust to its new environment, especially if there’s a difference in humidity or room temperature. Once it settles, a professional tuner can bring it back to perfect pitch. This is completely normal and not a sign of damage—it’s just how pianos respond to being moved.
6. Is it safe to move a piano during winter in Montreal?
Yes, pianos can be moved safely in winter, but timing and handling matter more during cold months. In Montreal, winters can be harsh, and temperature changes between indoors and outdoors can affect a piano if it’s not protected properly. That’s why professional movers use insulated wrapping and quick loading techniques to reduce exposure to cold air.
Move Genius Canada, through services like déménagement Trois-Rivières, applies the same careful approach during winter moves. The goal is to minimize how long the piano is outside and avoid sudden temperature shocks. Once inside your new home, the piano should be placed in a stable environment away from heaters or direct cold drafts. With proper planning, winter moves are just as safe as summer ones.
7. How long does a piano move usually take?
The time it takes to move a piano depends on the complexity of the job. A simple ground-floor move within Montreal might take just a couple of hours, while a move involving stairs, elevators, or long-distance transport can take longer. The preparation stage is often what takes the most time, since the piano needs to be properly wrapped and secured before it is even lifted.
If you’re combining services like déménagement Terrebonne with piano transport, scheduling becomes even more important. Move Genius Canada usually plans everything in advance so there are no delays on moving day. Their team works efficiently, but they never rush the process because safety always comes first when handling heavy instruments like pianos.
8. Can I combine piano moving with my home move?
Yes, and this is actually one of the smartest ways to handle things. If you’re already moving your home, adding your piano to the same service makes everything simpler and more organized. You don’t have to coordinate multiple companies or worry about timing conflicts.
Move Genius Canada offers combined solutions where your piano is moved alongside your household items, whether you’re using déménagement Granby or moving within Montreal. This reduces stress and often saves time because everything is handled in one coordinated plan. The movers can prioritize your piano or load it separately if needed, depending on what keeps it safest. It’s all about making your move smoother without adding extra complications.
9. What happens if my building has tight hallways or small doors?
Tight spaces are very common in Montreal, especially in older buildings. But that doesn’t mean your piano can’t be moved. Professional movers are used to dealing with narrow staircases, small elevators, and awkward corners. They plan ahead by measuring and checking access points before moving day.
With services like diable déménagement, the team uses specialized tools like piano boards and lifting straps to carefully maneuver through tight areas. Sometimes they slightly rotate or angle the piano to fit through spaces safely. The key is patience and technique—not force. If something looks too risky, they adjust the plan instead of pushing through. That’s what keeps both your piano and your home protected.
10. Why should I choose professionals instead of moving a piano myself?
Moving a piano on your own might seem like a way to save money, but it usually ends up being more expensive in the long run. Pianos are heavy, awkward, and extremely easy to damage if they’re not handled correctly. One slip on a staircase or a wrong lift can cause serious injury or expensive repairs to both the piano and your home.
Professional movers like Move Genius Canada bring experience, equipment, and a system designed specifically for this kind of job. Whether it’s through déménagement en anglais or local Montreal services, they know how to protect the instrument from start to finish. You’re not just paying for labor—you’re paying for safety, efficiency, and peace of mind. That’s what makes the difference when dealing with something as valuable and delicate as a piano.
